Constantly Challenging Industry Expectactions
Founded in 1993, ORO Design started its journey as engineering consultants specializing in support equipment for the Canadian mining industry. Finding a lack of quality manufacturers in the truck body space, it was almost impossible to bring these equipment designs to life that could withstand the harsh conditions of open pit mining.
Family-owned and operated, ORO Design built the first truck body in a residential garage over 30 years ago and transitioned from design and consulting to design and manufacturing, building the first dedicated 3,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Oro-Medonte, Ontario in 2001.
With quality, innovation and design at the forefront of every truck body built, and with customers like Toromont CAT, Agnico Eagle Mines, Canadian Royalties and Kal Tire understanding the value of an ORO Truck body, ORO Design went through rapid growth phases for the next 2 decades, growing the manufacturing facilities to over 32,000 square feet with 50 employees and the second generation firmly rooted in leadership roles.
In April 2023, with the founders Lorraine and Barry Smith looking to wind down and retire, ORO Design & Manufacturing Ltd. was acquired by Drive Products, a Canadian company founded in 1983 with multiple service locations across Canada and the United States.
With this change, ORO Design remains unchanged and focused on manufacturing quality with the continued management direction of both David Smith (President) and Melinda Smith (Marketing Manager), second generation to the original founders, who are passionate about continuing the legacy.
These aren’t your average service trucks. They’re not disposable, they’ll outperform in the harshest and coldest environments and they’re designed to survive decades of service, with their ability to be rebuilt over time.
